Inverell Residence

A warm and cosy design to a rural retirement.

Located on a large rural block in NSW, this property is a modest, energy efficient home designed to be lived in through retirement. This resulted in a one storey home with three bedrooms and two bathrooms and plenty of northern light. The house is clad in a combination of dark Colorbond, fibre cement panels, and timber lining.

Client Priorities

The main priority for our clients was to end up with a warm and cosy home that doesn’t feel like a display home. To do this, the interior design has very little cold tiling  and emphasises timber floors and cabinetry, which will be further refined by soft furnishings. The living area opens to the alfresco deck through large sliding doors that help to combine the indoor and outdoor living spaces. The long singular form of the home is punctuated with a roof that sails over the protected central alfresco, creating a defined point of entry and visual focus.

Sustainable Features

To allow for lots of subfloor insulation we designed the home to be elevated off the ground. This, combined with extensive insulation throughout the rest of the home and double glazed windows ensures that it has excellent thermal performance without the need for mechanical heating or cooling. During temperate periods, large openable windows to both the north and south facades combined with the small cross section act as natural ventilation.
